A former Sullivan County sheriff’s deputy allegedly took $198,566 while she was employed, according to federal court documents.
Mary Handzus, 63, of Laporte, was charged with theft in the scheme which took place between 2012 and last year, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the state police.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jenny P. Roberts is prosecuting the case.
Handzus, if convicted, could face a 10-year prison term, according to U.S. Attorney David J. Freed.
