Virginia Tech provides virtual tours, info sessions in response to COVID-19

BLACKSBURG, Va. — Spring is normally a busy time on college campuses with prospective students visiting and newly-admitted students stopping by to get ready for the fall semester. Now, these visits are becoming virtual because of COVID-19.

All week, Virginia This Morning is taking viewers on some of these virtual college tours.

Today, we head to beautiful Blacksburg to check in with Virginia Tech.

With more than 35,000 students, more than 100 degree options, 200 buildings and 2,000 acres of land, there is a lot to explore at Virginia Tech.

But COVID-19 has forced the school to cancel in-person information sessions and tours.

“This is unfortunate because interest at Virginia Tech is at an all-time high. Last year, we hosted over 50,000 here at our Office of Undergraduate Admissions,” said Juan Espinoza, director of undergraduate admissions.

Espinoza says the team has been busy making adjustments to bring the visit to students’ computer screens.

“We have moved our major programming to a virtual format and we’ve also moved our daily information sessions and tours online,” said Epinoza. “We hope that we’ll bring that Hokie experience to students in their homes.”

On the ‘Virtual VT Visit’ webpage, visitors will find several helpful digital components, including a video information session, a self-guided tour and a 360° campus tour led by a Hokie Ambassador.

“The best part about that tour is you can pan around the view as he is walking around during his tour,” said Espinoza. “It is such a unique experience.”

The Office of Undergraduate Admissions remains open virtually. Anyone with questions can contact the main line at 540-231-6267 or email admissions@vt.edu.

“I know it’s a difficult time, but our brightest days are ahead and we will come out stronger as a Hokie Nation,” said Espinoza.
