SERVPRO of Brown County is busy cleaning businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic

GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) -Several local businesses are bringing in professional cleaners to disinfect their properties after employees tested positive for COVID-19. Mid Vallee Golf Course is one of those places. It’s clubhouse, including the bar and restaurant, reopened on Monday after closing over the weekend.

Business is booming for SERVPRO of Brown County. In addition to the regular cleanup and restoration work the company does, it’s seeing an increase in calls for COVID-19 cleanup.

“You have three categories out there. Category one is being pretty preventive, nothing out there. Category two, there might be something out there so let’s spraying it down, let’s wipe it down, let’s clean. Category three, if there’s a suspected or a COVID-19 then we go in,” says Jim Knopf of SERVPRO of Brown County.

In those category three calls, SERVPRO asks for the building to be emptied for half a day before it even goes inside to clean.

According to Knopf, “You try to sit around, let the building be unoccupied for 12 hours so everything with the contaminants will settle.”

Then, a technician, in protective gear heads inside. They wipe down anything the employee who tested positive could have touched before using a fog machine, filled with an EPA approved cleaning chemical, to spray the entire building down.

“You’re going to have to do all of the dishes, you’re going to have to do all of the glasses, and you can spread it out and fog it so it lands on there and just leave it sit on there,” adds Knopf.

Once the solution dries, a process that only takes about ten minutes, the surfaces and building are considered disinfected — at that time.

Knopf says, “It’s very effective for the time being. It’s not going to prevent COVID-19, it will clean it up. If it’s there we’ll clean it up. But somebody could walk in a half hour later and be contaminated and it will start all over again.”

SERVPRO says while the coronavirus is new, this type of cleaning is something they’ve done a lot of in the past with other illnesses and will continue to do as long as it’s needed.
