India’s merchandise exports rose by 15.46 per cent to USD 37.29 billion in May on account of healthy performance by sectors like petroleum products, electronic goods and chemicals, even as the trade deficit widened to USD 23.33 billion during the month, the commerce ministry said on Thursday. Imports during the month too grew by 56.14 per cent to USD 60.62 billion. The trade deficit in May 2021 stood at USD 6.53 billion.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court Thursday dismissed a petition of jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi who was seeking appropriate directions for not handing over his custody to the Punjab police in the singer Sidhu Moosewala murder case. Bishnoi, who is suspected to be involved in Moosewala’s killing, had moved this high court Wednesday after withdrawing his plea from the Delhi High Court in which he said he feared he would be killed in a “fake encounter” by the Punjab police, and sought necessary safeguards.

The rupee depreciated by 10 paise to close at 77.60 (provisional) against the US dollar on Thursday, even as oil prices eased and domestic equities settled on a positive note. At the interbank foreign exchange market, the rupee consolidated in a narrow range. It opened lower at 77.61 against the greenback and finally settled at 77.60, down 10 paise over its previous close. During the session, the rupee touched an intra-day low of 77.63 and a high of 77.54.
ED moves Delhi HC challenging order allowing Satyendar Jain to have counsel during interrogation
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) approached the Delhi High court on Thursday challenging the order of a special court allowing Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain to have counsel during interrogation. Special Judge Geetanjali Goel on May 31 granted the custody of Jain to ED till June 9 in a money laundering case. Advocate Zoheb Hossain for ED mentioned the matter before the bench of Acting Chief Justice Vipin Sanghi. The Court agreed to hear the petition on Friday.

NSE governance lapses case: SAT gives more time to Chitra Ramkrishna to deposit Rs 2 crore
The Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) has given more time to former NSE chief Chitra Ramkrishna for depositing an amount of Rs 2 crore in a case pertaining to governance lapses at the bourse. “The period to deposit the money by our order dated 11th April, 2022 is extended for a further period of four weeks,” the appellate tribunal said in an order passed on May 31. In its order on April 11, SAT admitted Ramkrishna’s plea in the case and had directed her to deposit an amount of Rs 2 crore within six weeks. It had said that if such an amount was deposited, the balance amount will not be recovered during the pendency of the appeal.
Policy tightening to pressure fiscal numbers, deficit seen at 6.7% in FY23: Report
As the country’s fiscal policy is moving in sync with the monetary policy amid the runaway inflation, the tightening measures along with rising subsidies imply that the consolidated fiscal deficit may remain elevated at 10.2 per cent of GDP in FY23, down 20 bps from FY22, according to a report. As per the report, the central deficit is expected to be at 6.7 per cent and states’ at 3.5 per cent in the current fiscal. The government has pegged the combined fiscal shortfall at 9.8 per cent of which the central deficit is seen at 6.4 per cent (down from 6.7 per cent in FY22) and states’ at 3.4 per cent for FY23.

SBI revises up FY23 GDP growth forecast to 7.5%
SBI Research has projected the Indian economy to grow at 7.5 per cent in 2022-23, an upward revision of 20 basis points from its earlier estimate. As per official data, the economy grew by 8.7 per cent in FY22, net adding Rs 11.8 lakh crore in the year to Rs 147 lakh crore, the report said, adding this was however only 1.5 per cent higher than the pre-pandemic year of FY20.

Amazon.com’s Kindle unit said on Thursday it will stop operating its Kindle e-bookstore in China from the end of June next year, after which customers in China will no longer be able to purchase new ebooks.
